Cherrie Rain runs a closed, (other than an occasional show) clean herd and seperates does by age group and rotate pens periodically, sterilizing each pen afterwards for extra prevention.
I vaccinate against enterotoxemia, tetanus, and pasteurella, and
I test yearly for CAE, CL and Johnes and just started 2011 with Linear Appraisals and DHIR, which we hope to be able to do every year.
I feed my goats alfalfa and orchard grass hays and always provide loose mineral, kelp powder, baking soda and fresh water. For our lactating does we feed a high quality 16% grain ration with Omega fatty acids and a medicated grain for the kids to prevent coccidiosis.
I copper boluse twice yearly and worm when necessary and give Thiamine and Probios after stressful situations.
I practice natural CAE prevention on my kids by keeping pens as clean as possible, having kidding stalls sterilized and feeding kids from does that are tested yearly for CAE as I believe that it gives the kids the best start in life, as heat treating and pasteurization destroys vital nutrients.
